The book takes place in early 18th century Sicily.  I came across the word "pavigliotti". I cannot find a definition anywhere.  Here is the paragraph where it appears:

"E faremo arricciare i nostri capelli!...Andrò a letto coi pavigliotti. Piuttosto ho bisogno di camicie e di cravatte di pizzo..."
